Beating of Eucalyptus Pulp Fibers under Neutral and Alkaline Conditions – A Valley Beater Study

Beating is one of the most important and complicated processes that influences paper production quality from both a process property standpoint.
 With increasing costs, environmental regulations competitiveness in today’s global market, board producers revisit existing to decrease costs. New approached with additives such as new developed in-situ precipitated fillers materials have potential reduce cost increase profit margins.
 For this research bleached eucalyptus Kraft pulp adjusted pH 7.5, 11.0 12.3, laboratory manufactured calcium carbonate filler level based on oven dry fiber content 20.9% 41.7% commercial produced 10% 20%. All suspensions were beaten for 80 minutes samples taken at unbeaten 20 increments.
 The beating curve over time show filer material higher dewatering ability compared pulps PCC different values.
 Viscosity slightly decreases suspension content. Pulp 12.3 showed significant viscosity time, superseding containing suspensions.
 Basis weight decreased all suspensions, which can be explained an increased fines during lower retention handsheet forming.
